“ONE”... or, five people in search of their identity...
Thomas Geffrier’s passion is the individual that escaped from the greyness of daily life, and with this project he questions the idea of the uniform. What remains once everything has been erased?
Five individuals, men and women, of different ages and origins, identical and unique at the same time. With these portraits the artist refers to the increasing uniformization of our age and the globalized individual of the future.
While the impoverishment of identity doesn’t seem to worry the sitters, their faces are both stern and open. Thomas Geffrier doesn’t believe in the objective values - age, sex, etc. -, and presents us a cool neutrality, which however is disarmed by the physiques of his models which is impossible to restrain. Shoulders sloping, necks enclosed; apparent strength or declared softness, each body speaks for itself and its soul. The faces, ephemeral representations of different ethnic groups and ages, become objects of desire and stir our emotions in this play with photographic cloning.

Thomas Geffrier se passionne pour l’individu, échappé de la masse grise du quotidien, et pose dans « ONE » la question de l’uniformisation: que reste-t-il quand on a tout gommé ?
Cinq personnes, femmes et hommes, d’âges et d’origines divers, face à l’objectif, identiques et pourtant intensément seuls, uniques. Dans ces portraits, l’artiste représente avec sobriété l’uniformisation grandissante, l’individu globalisé du futur. Pourtant, cette pauperization identitaire ne semble pas l’inquiéter, les visages sont graves mais ouverts.
Thomas Geffrier ne croit pas aux valeurs objectives - âge, sexe, etc. -, et démontre dans « ONE » une volonté de froide neutralité, cependant désamorcée par les corps de ses modèles: impossible de les contraindre. Epaules affaissées, cou rentré, vigueur apparente ou mollesse déclarée, les corps parlent et ne cachent rien de leur intégrité. Les visages, éphémères reflets d’ethnies et d’âges variés, deviennent ainsi objets de désir, sources de sensations dans ce clonage photographique.
